How to Become a Texas State Trooper

Introduction

If you want to help keep the peace and establish order in Texan society, you may want to become a Texas State Trooper. To be a Texas State Trooper you will need to have great moral character and you will need to be physically and mentally sound. You cannot have any misdemeanors on file. You must be a resident of Texas to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety as a State Trooper.

Instructions

Step 1

Celebrate your 20th birthday before you attempt to become a state trooper in Texas. You must also be a US citizen.

Step 2

Graduate from a college with an Associate’s degree. You can complete 90 academic college hours in lieu of a degree.

Step 3

Fill out an application. You can find the form here: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/trainingacademy/Trooper_Trainee/training.htm. Submit the application and sign up for a testing date.

Step 4

Pass a physical demands exam. You will have to do sit-ups and push-ups. You will also have to run 1.5 miles.

Step 5

Take a pass the written test. This will test your reading and writing skills, as well as your SRA Adaptability.

Step 6

Fill out a personal history. This will be used during your subsequent polygraph test, which you need to pass

Step 7

Submit to a background check. No record should show up.

Step 8

Go to your interview. Speak with potential employers and make a good impression on them.

Step 9

Pass medical, vision, and psychological examinations. You must have 20/30 vision with or without glasses or contact lenses and you cannot have any ocular diseases.

Step 10

Complete basic training at the Law Enforcement Academy in Austin. You will live at the Academy. Training is around 28 weeks long.

Step 11

Accept a job offer from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Begin work and continue training on-the-job.
